Safety Alert
Paramaribo – March 28, 2024 – Safety Alert : The National Institute for Food Safety Suriname (NIVS) advises consumers to avoid consuming Katjang Pedis (Spicy Nuts) from the SPAR brand with Lot Number 12062024 due to possible contamination with Aflatoxin.
NIVS was informed of this incident as a result of a voluntary notification by the authority of the producing/exporting country.
NIVS mobilized the Inspection Department and the Incident Management Team to take action. During the investigation, NIVS did the following:
- Contacted the importer with instructions to withdraw the products Katjang Pedis (Spicy Nuts) of the SPAR brand with Lot Number 12062024.
- Once the entire batch is collected, it will be destroyed.
Consumers should check their food purchases and ensure that they do not stock Katjang Pedis (Spicy Nuts) of the SPAR brand with Lot Number 12062024. If you find such a product in your purchases, you are kindly requested to return it immediately to the store where you bought it.
Can you get sick from consuming this product?
The consumer is unlikely to exhibit acute symptoms. Only regular and long-term consumption may have health consequences.
Aflatoxins are natural toxins that are carcinogenic.
