The first meeting of the National Codex Committee of Suriname was convened on June 14, 2023 by NIVS. Since its creation in 2020 as the primary food safety regulator in Suriname, NIVS has the prerogative to host the Codex Contact Point (CCP) of Suriname and therefore to operate the National Codex Committee (NCC).
Relying on a National Committee for Codex (NCC) , is part of the application of best practices advocated by the Codex Alimentarius Commission and its parent organizations FAO and WHO. The NCC allows to engage with all government partners and stakeholders with an interest in food standard setting and therefore able to shape Suriname’s position in the development of international food standards.
The first NCC meeting was chaired by Mrs. Juliette Colli, CEO of NIVS and chair of the NCC. The meeting allowed to review the terms of reference of the NCC and enabled an initial discussion of previous Codex activities through the “Codex Season 2022-23”. Reviewing upcoming meetings, identified an initial opportunity of the preparation for the upcoming Codex Executive Committee (CCEXEC), planned for the week of July 10th, 2023. This preparation will need to be coordinated with the current efforts underway through the Codex Committee for Latin America and the Caribbean (CCLAC), and the representatives of the region at the CCEXEC.
Through the operationalization of the NCC, NIVS is determined to establish an international food regulatory policy through planning its activities within the Codex Alimentarius Commission and its interactions with other regulators regionally and internationally, in complete consultation and engagement with NIVS stakeholders.
